Are you attending the NAEYC 2016 Annual Conference & Expo? With 600 engaging sessions and hundreds of exhibitors available to you, it’s important to be prepared so you can get the most out of your experience. Whether you’re a conference newcomer or a seasoned pro, the following tips may help you develop your “game plan”.
Pack comfortable clothes and shoes!
You will be doing plenty of walking between sessions, workshops, and exhibitor booths in the L.A. Convention Center and even possibly to and from your hotel. Your feet will appreciate a pair of good walking shoes. Be sure to dress in layers so you can stay comfortable throughout the day. A lightweight sweater or cardigan is easy to put on or take off as needed, depending on the varying climates in the convention hall, workshop rooms, and exhibitor booths.
Decide what you want your schedule to look like beforehand.
Plan which sessions you will want to attend and think about what topics and presenters will be most relevant to you. Check out NAEYC’s Itinerary Planner for the full list of scheduled sessions which you can browse by track, presenter, and title. Also, build some time into your daily plan to explore the convention center, visit exhibitor booths, and connect with other attendees.
Stay organized during week.
Bring folders, manila envelopes, or binders to store handouts, notes, and business cards you pick up during the conference. Staying organized throughout the week will make it that much easier to review your materials once you get home! Print and bring adhesive address labels with your contact information listed; this serves the double purpose of easily sharing your information with new colleagues you meet AND efficiently signing yourself up for vendor raffles, giveaways, and mailing lists. You’ll be glad to save time by not having to hand write your contact information over and over.
Make time to enjoy L.A.
The “City of Angels” has something for everyone! Carve out some time for yourself to explore the culture, entertainment, food, and geography of the Los Angeles area. The convention center and conference hotels are in the middle of downtown L.A., which features some of the best concert and sports venues as well as amazing restaurants. If you’re looking for something more active, take a hike along the Hollywood sign or head to the beach for sand and sun! Additionally, a trip to one of the many area museums will satisfy those wanting a more low-key experience.
